MARAKELE NATIONAL PARK
Marakele lies in the heart of the Waterberg and is dominated by mountain scenery, grassed hills and deeply incised valleys. It lies
in a transitional zone between the arid west and the higher-rainfall eastern region.
Apart from the very rich plant diversity, many game species have been re-introduced; these include black and white rhinoceros, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and at least 13 antelope species. To date, 280 bird species have been recorded, and this includes the world's largest breeding colony (more than 800 pairs) of the endangered Cape griffon.
Location: Close to Thabazimbi in Northern Province; 250 km north of Johannesburg. Access: From Thabazimbi travel due east in the direction of Alma for 17 km to the Marakele office turnoff. The entrance gate lies approximately 21 km north in the the direction of Hoopdal. If you corne from Nylstroom in the direction of Ellisras (R33) take the turnoff at Alma, continuing to the park office. Internai roads are only suitable for 4x4 vehicles.
Accommodation: 6 furnished tents on the banks of the Matlabas River; each tent has 2 single beds and 2 stretchers with mattresses and en-suite bathroom; fully equipped
kitchen; barbecue facilities.
Other facilities: Road network (4x4 vehicles only); no fuel or supplies so bring ail your requirements.
Open: Throughout the year.
Opening time: Sunrise to sunset (check with authority).
Beware: The tented camp is unfenced
so be aware of potentially dangerous game animais; malaria.
